Harmony Photos

Harmony Photos

Harmony Photos was founded in 2022 by Bishop Prof. Dr. Dennis T.W. Ng, with a visionary approach to addressing the challenges of promoting peace and organizing academic conferences on harmony amidst the backdrop of the Russian-Ukrainian War and the Sino-American tensions. Recognizing the limitations of conventional channels, Prof. Ng embarked on a path of promoting cultural tourism and photography projects worldwide. These endeavors sought to foster cross-cultural understanding, enabling travelers to delve into the rich tapestry of different countries' cultures and histories, while strictly avoiding any hint of political advocacy.

Professor Ng’s Foundation, which has been granted special consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC), leverages the expertise of renowned photographers and musicians from different countries and regions. Through the utilization of static and visual media, the Foundation endeavors to exemplify the importance of mutual appreciation for one another's cultures and histories, promoting cultural exchanges and communication amidst the turbulence era. The Foundation will organize a photo exhibition at the United Nations in New York in 2025. This exhibition will serve as a platform to showcase the harmony and beauty found within diverse regions and countries.

After witnessing the fall of Saigon in Vietnam in 1975, the renowned contemporary photographer Hiroji Kubota underwent a profound shift in his artistic focus, directing his lens towards the vast landscapes of Asia. During this period, Kubota obtained permission to document the unfolding events in China. This journey spanned 1,000 days and resulted in an astounding collection of 200,000 photographs, which ultimately led to the creation of his famous book titled 'China'. Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1939, Kubota held a distinguished positionas the sole Japanese photographer in Magnum Photos and received the Publishing Culture Award from Kodansha in 1970.

In his recent memorable visit to Hong Kong, I had the privilege of engaging in a captivating conversation and conducting a photo shoot with Hiroji Kubota. It was a celebration of his enduring legacy and remarkable achievements in his illustrious career, even at 84. During our time together, I captured a portrait titled "Maestroand His Follower," which Kubota graciously appreciated for its depiction of his essence. In return, he requested a copy of my recent work, "Walkers to Heavens?" captured in the captivating landscapes of Georgia. I was deeply honored to have my work acknowledged by such a master. Let us draw inspiration from this extraordinary experience, propelling us to new heights of artistic expression and exploration in photography.

“The narrative thread Prof. Dennis has constructed here – showing the artifice and "behind the scenes" technical aspects in some shots while giving fully into the period-film fantasy in others – creates an interesting cinematic tension that's heightened by framing the images in black rather than white.”

“I really appreciate Prof. Ng’s thorough writing around all the cultural nuances of the region. It seems like the bridges of Alladin/Disney with places that have conflict in a fantasy world brings about a bit of a surreal experience in the photograph. I do feel like this fantasy world is being created. These works are really well, creating an environment that evokes peace and beauty.”

“Thank you for sharing your interests in cultural studies, film, and mixing it with photography. You came in with a lot of studio experience and thinking deeply about composition also helps you expand your interests interms of the way that you are aesthetically expressing some of your conceptual decisions. Also, it is really nice to hear about some of the series that are popular with a Chinese audience and some of the aesthetics involved in the shows.”
