Pilot Project on the International Youth Ambassador Program

Bishop Dennis Ng Victory Ministries Foundation has allocated approximately HK$2 million from 2019 to 2022 to implement the Pilot Project on the International Youth Ambassador Program. The four-year project has been very successful, serving through the creation of a network of Youth Ambassador trainees, Youth Ambassadors, Youth Ambassador fellows, which was developed by scholars involved in this service.

The Scholars Network The project began with the creation of a network of scholars to serve the region with a solid theoretical approach, focusing on how Asia faced social instability, economic hardship, and lack of opportunities during these years. Meanwhile, theories on youth services and promoting positive youth development are consolidated.

The pilot phase was initiated by the Institute of International Harmony and Sustainable Development (IIHSD) of Bishop Dennis Ng Victory Ministries Foundation, starting with the first International Harmony Conference held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Participating scholars in our network were from University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, The Education University of Hong Kong, Oxford University, Liverpool Hope University, Yale University, Princeton University, LMU Munich University, National University of Malaysia and other prestigious institutions.
After that, a series of Regional Harmony Conferences were held by IIHSD in various countries. In addition, a side event for the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council was held at the New York UN Headquarter.
Furthermore, various scholar-led training programmes were provided worldwide, and a memorandum of understanding was signed between IIHSD and LEADS, a local NGO in Sri Lanka, to organise a series of community-based and youth-centred projects in partnership.
The Youth Ambassadors Network
The Youth Ambassadors attended regular trainings provided by IIHSD and were appointed to serve university and secondary school students by holding regular meetings to facilitate positive youth development.

In each of the above-mentioned event of the Scholars Network, at least ten Youth Ambassadors participated and were responsible for logistical support in terms of work (including transportation, venue decoration, publications, etc.). Through the process, Youth Ambassadors were equipped with event management skills, including practical knowledge to deliver international events and inter-personal and leadership skills, etc. The participating Youth Ambassadors learn about international social services provision as well as services to young people through various local ministry projects.

In conclusion, the four-year Pilot Project on the International Youth Ambassador Program has been very successful in creating a network of mutual help and contacts in the international academic arena, and in training over 20 youth ambassadors from Hong Kong in the Pilot Project.

Future Development
With the changing international context and the increasing difficulties faced by young people in different regions, the pilot project will enter its first phase, which is expected to reach a mature stage from 2023 onwards. In addition to the existing Youth Ambassadors, we will train an additional 40 Hong Kong Youth Ambassadors over the next two years, mostly targeting current university students in Hong Kong.

These Youth Ambassadors will hold follow-up groups for university and secondary school students in Hong Kong. In addition to their substantive work in the region, they will also undergo advanced Youth Ambassadors training and participate in a side event at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council in New York to raise international awareness of our youth's aspirations for development and peace in Asia.

By participating in the side event organised by IIHSD, the international community will be able to understand the aspirations of our young people in Asia for development and peace, and to work together towards peace, development and prosperity, so that these young people of Hong Kong can build their own identity through the international conference, and be enthusiastic and hopeful in their own development and in serving the community.

Mr. Eric Z.W. Huang,
Aided Youth of the Pilot Project

I was born in Huizhou, Guangdong Province. After graduating from secondary school, I felt at a loss as to what to do, so I spent a whole year in the Mainland doing computer courses. Thanks to the "Pilot Project on the International Youth Ambassador Program" organised by the Institute of International Harmonious and Sustainable Development of Bishop Dennis Ng Victory Ministries Foundation, I was encouraged to study culinary arts at the Hong Kong Culinary Academy. Although I was unable to obtain a student visa and had to transferred to the Zhuhai campus to continue my studies, I am grateful for the encouragement and guidance from the Youth Ambassadors who inspired me to find a pathway to further studies and the scholarship for further studies abroad. Today I am continuing my studies at the University of West London and will complete my university degree in a few months. In addition, I have witnessed how the Project has helped me when I was unsure of my future and when I was ill. Today I am not only healthy, but I am able to graduate in the UK. I hope that many more young people will benefit in the future from the success of this pilot project as it enters its official phase.

Prof. Dr. Michelle H.Y. Shum,
Senior Youth Ambassador

Time flies and it has been 16 years since I became involved with the Bishop Dennis Ng Victory Ministries Foundation. It was a time when I was faced with the uncertainty of graduating from university and the problems of young people. Today, I have successfully completed my PhD and have been a professor at the Hong Kong Baptist University for five years. Four years ago, I was invited to participate in the Pilot Project on the International Youth Ambassadors Program as a mentor to train today's young people to be Youth Ambassadors. It was like searching through my memories of my youth and editing, revising and thinking about the direction of my life for myself. As I teach them to be Youth Ambassadors, it is as if I am witnessing that it is more blessed to give than to receive in life.

Mr. Lemuel F.K. Kwok,
Senior Youth Ambassador

Bishop Dennis Ng Victory Ministries Foundation has been a great help to me. One of the most difficult times in my life was when I felt helpless when I was enrolled in the Juris Doctor programme. Bishop Dennis Ng Victory Ministries Foundation allowed me to join a youth group, which helped me to graduate from the Juris Doctor programme, gain the Postgraduate Certificate of Laws and eventually become a practicing lawyer. I am now a Partner at CMK lawyers. The Pilot Project on the International Youth Ambassadors Program has taught me that when we help others, we encourage ourselves, so I enjoy the opportunity to serve as a Youth Ambassador mentor. In fact, while I was serving as a mentor for the Youth Ambassadors, one of my learned friend from the Juris Doctor programme, Leo, who is also a lawyer, was also involved in the mentorship programme and helped many young people alongside me. This made me feel that the mentorship programme has also enhanced our friendship and collaboration.

Mr. Lee (pseudonym), father

Thank you for this Pilot Project on the International Youth Ambassador Program! I was initially worried that my son would not be able to get into a local university at the public examination, and indeed my son has a strong pull to avoid public exams. I had encouraged him to study at a university in Germany. Although no tuition fees are required, the cost of living in Germany is very high. Through the group held by your Youth Ambassadors, with their guidance and encouragement, my son has now been admitted to the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and is enjoying his studies, which is a great comfort to me!

Mrs. Chan (pseudonym)

Thank you to the Pilot Project on the International Youth Ambassador Program launched by Bishop Dennis Ng Victory Ministries Foundation! Through the inspiration of the group, when I got pregnant unexpectedly, which was a situation that my mother would not have accepted and I did not know how to tell her, I did not have an abortion and managed to let my mother know and understand that I am now officially married and living a happy life. My baby has been born and growing up healthily. Thank you again to the group for allowing me to appreciate this opportunity to raise a child and build a wonderful family.
